The next installment in our 2015 Rockies Year in Review series features starting pitcher Yohan Flande.

Here at Rox Pile, we are starting a player review for each and every player that suited up in a Colorado Rockies uniform this season. This series will be going all the way up until Dec. 16 with player profiles posted every day.

Where do I start with Yohan Flande? It seems as if every time the Rockies’ inserted the southpaw into the lineup during the 2014 season, the year he made his Major League debut, they were either losing badly or out of arms, or both. However, Flande proved to be quite valuable to the Rockies in 2015, despite the naysayers.

Flande, 29, made 19 appearances for the Rockies this past season, 10 of those being starts. The native of the Dominican Republic finished the year with a 3-3 record, posting a 1.43 WHIP accompanied by an ERA of 4.74. The southpaw logged over 68.1 innings, yielding 36 runs on 73 hits while walking 25 and striking out 43.

Looking at Flande’s statistics for the 2015 season is a head scratcher, especially his home/road splits. Usually, a Rockies’ pitcher will perform below-average at home while pitching better on the road. However, opponents hit .301 off Flande in eight games on the road, giving up 16 runs and eight home runs during that span.

As for his home splits, opponents hit just .258 off him, producing 20 runs in the span over 11 games. Flande gave up two fewer home runs while striking out seven more batters, which is understandable in three more games at home. And of course, Flande performed better against left-hander batters who hit .262 off him, opposed to righties that hit .281.

Another interesting statistic I came across while reviewing the Rockies’ overall, Flande was the ninth best Rockie according to WAR (Wins Above Replacement), sitting at 0.9. Now, that’s not that big of an accomplishment, considering the Rockies’ were pretty bad, but he was the third best pitcher on that list, tied with Jon Axford. The two pitchers in front of them; Chad Bettis (2.6) and Jorge De La Rosa (2.5) — no doubters.

All-in-all, the season was an improvement for Flande. His 2014 ERA, 5.19, in 16 appearances dropped down to 4.95 for his career, thanks to his 2015 performance (4.74) in 19 appearances.
