The Bud Black firing was inevitable While the horrific start to 2025 wasn’t Black’s fault, hews always going to be the Colorado Rockies’ first domino to fall.
And fall he did. The Rockies fired Black last Sunday, ironically after winning their first game in nine tries.
Colorado is now being led by interim manager Warren Schaeffer, who had been the third-base coach under Black. And while Schaeffer’s job is secure for the remainder of the season, and change won’t come overnight, the fact of the matter is, the Rockies have already lost twice since Black was dismissed, and, it’s the same roster, and the same injury problems that the Rockies had before last Sunday.
So, if Colorado can’t show marked improvement over the next four months, what’s next? Where do the Rockies go from here?
There are three things that Rockies’ fans can expect to see over the remainder of the regular season, and into the fall as the team continues to struggle mightily.
First, before the season is even over, the Rockies will likely move players. Early candidates to be traded include Ryan McMahon, German Marquez, but honestly, outside of Brenton Doyle, Ezequiel Tovar and Chase Dollander, is anyone else off the table?
Colorado has great young players in Hunter Goodman and Jordan Beck, and they may be untouchable as well, but, the Rockies will likely entertain plenty of trade possibilities over the next few months.
When Colorado does reach the finish line, the Rockies will likely have to fire General Manager Bill Schmidt. After all, he has put this team together, and the team he’s assembled isn’t performing. If Black was the first domino, Schmidt should fall as well.
Finally, if Colorado doesn’t make a pretty hefty turnaround, Schaeffer and most of the coaching staff will be gone. Then who does Colorado turn to? Back to Clint Hurdle? A fresh face from the dugout of the Dodgers or Padres? Managerial possibilities are endless in baseball, but, the fact of the matter is, the Rockies will need new leadership when this season is over, and it’s doubtful it will be Schaeffer.
So, more change is coming to Colorado, because no matter what the reasons were to get rid of Black, and some were valid, the trainwreck of a season the Rockies are going through isn’t going to turn around this season, and more people will have to be held accountable.
