Even though he gave up Aaron Judge’s league-leading 18th homerun in the first inning, Kyle Freeland the Colorado Rockies were crushing right along on Saturday afternoon.

Then, as been the case too many times this season, the wheels fell off. But Saturday against the New York Yankees at Coors Field, the wheels didn’t just fall off, they really came off.

Tied at 1-1 in the fifth, the vaunted Yankees put up 10 runs in what would be a 13-1 win over the Rockies. The Yankees had nine of their 21 hits in the fifth as they chased Freeland from what was a great start, then funded Angel Chivilli for the carnage ended.

And just like that, the Rockies not only squandered a chance to beat the Yankees and win two in a row for only the third time this season, but, they wasted a strong early performance from Freeland.

And it was wasted, as the Yankees had six extra base hits including a double and a triple from Cody Bellinger, while Judge hit his second homer in as many days at Coors.

Meanwhile, Colorado’s offense could do nothing with Max Fried, who went seven innings, giving up just five hits and one run, an RBI triple from Michael Toglia in the fourth. Jordan Beck, Ezequiel Tovar, Nick Martini, Brenton Doyle and Adam Schunck all had hits, while Tyler Freeman had a double as the Rockies left five men on and struck out 10 times, seven coming by way of Fried, who improved to 7-0 on the season.

Colorado dropped to 9-43, but can win their first series of the season if they can beat the Yankees on Sunday. The two teams meet at 1:10 p.m. M.D.T. with Antonio Senzatela taking the field for the Rockies.
