The Colorado Rockies left Arlington, Texas with another losing streak. And the record for the worst start to a season in the modern Major League Baseball era.
That’s not exactly what the Rockies were looking for when they fired Bud Black and replaced him with then third-base coach Warren Schaeffer. But, it’s where the Rockies are, and this weekend, they’ll get back win the saddle and try again.
Starting Friday, the Rockies take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in an N.L. West showdown at Chase Field. The west rival Diamondbacks are 23-21 this season and are 5.5 games in back of the Dodgers in the standings.
The D-Backs come into the series with two of the best power-hitters in MLB as Corbin Carroll has 14 homers and Eugenio Suarez has 13. Arizona is an explosive team that also has strong pitching, which makes them a dangerous club.
Meanwhile, the Rockies are on the other end of that spectrum. They have won of the statistically worst offenses in baseball, and the pitching isn’t much better.
Speaking of pitching matchups, the Rockies haven’t announced a starter for Game One, which is set for 7:40 p.m. M.D.T tonight. Arizona star Corbin Burnes is set to go for the D-Backs. In Game Two Saturday, which will start at 6:30 p.m. German Marquez (1-6, 8.27 ERA, 20 SO) goes against Zac Gallen (3-5, 4.59 ERA, 54 SO). The series wraps on Sunday when Chase Dollancer (2-4, 6.88 ERA, 32 SO) faces Merill Kelly (4-2, 3.71 ERA, 41 SO) at 2:10 p.m. at Chase Field.
The D-Backs are a team that has had Colorado’s number over the last three years as they are 19-7 against the Rockies.
Colorado returns to Denver for seven straight at home next week as the Phillies and Yankees come to town.
