The Rockies have been playing some good baseball after their road-heavy start to the season. Despite a 2-4 record, Colorado boasts a +3 run differential, having lost their first three games to Miami by a single run each.
It's clear what needs improvement early on; the team is hitting just .226 with runners in scoring position, ranking 23rd in baseball. It's particularly noteworthy that the starting rotation ranks 6th in the league with an ERA of 3.16, while the bullpen is 16th with an ERA of 4.15.
Front office overhaul is leading to optimism in 2026
I believe the most significant change stemmed from the offseason, when Colorado brought in Paul DePodesta as President of Baseball Operations and Josh Byrnes as General Manager. The team also made some key veteran signings, infusing the clubhouse with a new energy and perspective.
The most significant change in my eyes has been the pitching staff overhaul, with the additions of Alon Leichman, Gabe Ribas, and Matt Buschmann, aimed at addressing the challenges of pitching at altitude. As mentioned above, Colorado's veteran rotation of Kyle Freeland, Michael Lorenzen, Jose Quintana, and Tomoyuki Sugano has met expectations in their respective first starts.
Colorado will get their first crack at pitching at Coors Field this Friday afternoon in their home opener against the NL East powerhouse, the Philadelphia Phillies, who have made the postseason in each of the last four seasons. The Rockies recently won two out of three games against the American League champion Toronto Blue Jays and will now face a team also aiming for the World Series, provided their pitching remains healthy.
Regarding Colorado's home opener festivities, live DJs will be at McGregor Square from 9:00 AM, with Coors Field gates opening at 12:00 PM. Pregame ceremonies will begin around 1:15 PM, the team will take the field with fireworks at 2:08 PM, and the first pitch is scheduled for 2:10 PM.
Rockies All-Star Hunter Goodman will also receive his 2025 Silver Slugger Award during the pregame festivities.
The Coors Field menu has some exciting new additions, such as The Glizzilla, Pizza Donuts, Dubai Cinnamon Roll, and Boozy Ice Cream. Additionally, the viral "9-9-9 challenge" is sweeping the internet, requiring fans to consume nine beers and nine hot dogs across nine innings.
The 9-9-9 Challenge is back and will be available at even more ballparks in 2026 👀
