Even though he has never been able to gain any traction since signing with the Rockies, fans have to be wondering if they’ll ever see Kris Bryant again.
Proclaiming he was as healthy as he’s been in years in spring training, Bryant went on the 10-day Injured List just two weeks into he regular season, and, as been the case many times before, the Rockies haven’t seen him on the diamond since.
Before injuring his back, Bryant had appeared in 11 game, with six hits, two doubles and one RBI. He was hitting .154 as Colorado’s full-time DH, and that kind of production wasn’t sustainable.
Of course, it wasn’t sustainable anyway because Bryant once again visited the IL. This time however, it was supposed to be to rest his ailing back, but, it’s obviously more then that.
Bryant has recently undergone more testing for a lumbar degenerative disc disease. Now, though no one’s said it, that sounds like something Bryant may not be able to play baseball with anymore. Bryant however, isn’t ready to give up. The former MVP is indeed frustrated, but, he clearly still wants to play baseball and live up to the contract the Rockies gave him.
"I'm not 23 anymore, so you don't feel like you can just roll out of bed and be Superman," Bryant said to reporters back on April 20. "At the same time, I feel like I've done everything I can. I've worked extremely hard in the offseason and continued it through spring training and in the season. And that's just the frustrating part. Just want something to kind of fall my way.”
The Rockies would like that, too. But, is it too late? Is Bryant too far past his prime to be a meaningful major leaguer anymore, let alone help a struggling franchise like the Rockies?
As much as everybody loves Bryant, and as great as he was, that question has to be asked, and eventually answered. And that answer will answer another question.
Will we ever see Kris Bryant play for the Rockies again?
Stay tuned.
