The Rockies have announced that they will adopt the opener strategy once again in their series opener against the Padres in San Diego on Thursday night.
#Rockies will employ RHP Jimmy Herget as the "opener" tonight vs. the #Padres. RHP Chase Dollander lines up as the "bulk." He's on four days' rest since throwing 71 pitches (49 strikes), fanning 6 and walking 1 while holding the #Phillies to one run in 4 1/3 IP on Saturday.

It’s safe to say that the strategy is paying off for Rockies former top prospect Chase Dollander, who continues to excel in this new role that’s helping him build confidence on the fly.
Jimmy Herget, a reliable arm from the Rockies’ bullpen, will be the opener. The bullpen has been solid so far this season for Colorado during their 6-6 start.
Herget has appeared in five games this season, allowing only one run over six innings and striking out six batters. He has also yet to give up a walk this season.
Dollander had mixed results in his first appearance in this role during his first game of the season against the Blue Jays, but he looked sharp during his last game against the Phillies.
He had some command issues during his first relief appearance, issuing two walks and allowing five hits while also giving up four runs.
His 2026 debut at Coors Field against the Phillies demonstrated precisely why Colorado selected him 9th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.
He was exceptionally sharp, and if I recall correctly, he threw seven to eight fastballs or sinkers to begin his outing. He allowed only one run on four hits over 4.1 innings, while also walking one batter and striking out six.
This presents a unique and pivotal learning opportunity for the hard-throwing right-hander who possesses the potential to become an ace in this league.
Colorado has been making waves in the baseball world since they started the 2026 season with a 6-6 record, despite being swept by the Marlins. They’ve been turning heads with their approach, and I expect the Rockies to continue using Dollander in this role until they feel confident enough to return him to the rotation.
