The Colorado Rockies are trying hard not to look back. But that’s easier said then done when you’ve won just three games all season long.
Still, looking forward is all the Rockies can do as they return home for a three-game set with the Washington Nationals at Coors Field.
Yes, the Rockies can’t dwell on the lack of hitting, or shaky pitching, or the runner’s in scoring position, or now, the injuries. Instead, they need to be focused on what they can do to start to turn things around before it’s too late.
And as Colorado nears the end of April, here’s three things the Rockies, and manager Bud Black need to shore up in order to make the climb out of the cellar before it’s too late. Because honestly, it’s baseball, and it’s not too late.
3. The lineup
With so many players slumping, it’s understandable why Black has really been sporadic with the lineup card. But at this juncture in the season, Black knows what he has in terms of the roster. And he needs to get the lineup into a grove. Brenton Doyle and Ezequiel Tovar are set at the top of the lineup, but Black needs to settle on where to hit Ryan McMahon and Michael Toglia in the order. He also needs to decide on an everyday outfield. It’s certainly Colorado’s strength, and it’s nice to have so many young options, but, Black needs to settle on right and left field on a day-to-day basis whether it’s Veen and Martini or Moniak and Martini, or Moniak and Veen, he needs to stick with a lineup for more than one game in a row and that should help the order from game-to-game.
2. Improve the bullpen
This is a personnel decision. The Rockies are in dire need of a bullpen that can hold the few leads they get. And so it’s obvious some moves need to made. A couple ideas would be to use Bradley Blalock more, or call up someone from AAA, or two for that matter. And when he’s healthy and ready, add Austin Gomber to the pen, and leave Chase Dollander in the rotation. Whatever, and whoever the Rockies use, they need to do it fast because what they have now in the bullpen isn’t working.
1. Produce more runs
It’s goes without saying. It’s the name of the game, but, the Rockies have got to start producing runs. They’re not great, but they’re good enough at producing base runners, they’re just not getting them in. The Rockies are slugging just .333 and have an OPS of just .333. Their OBS isn’t great either, but, they’ve had chances. However, when Tovar, McMahon and Toglia have combined for just nine RBI’s and Toglia has hit just one homer run, it’s no wonder the offense is struggling. Bottom line is, the Rockies need players to stop slumping and start hitting, or, things will get worse not better.
