The Colorado Rockies are no longer on a losing streak. And the win they picked up against the Atlanta Braves Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field was one they really needed.
Despite April being a historically bad month for Colorado, the Rockies ended it on a high note as they rode Chase Dollander and a strong showing from the bullpen to a 2-1 win, which snapped an eight-game losing stretch.
Brenton Doyled snapped a tough streak as well as he hit a two-run homerun in the third inning. Doyle hit his fourth homer of the season, and he doubled as well, while Dollander picked up his second win of 2025. But the big story was the Rockies’ pen holding down the fort. Jake Bird and Seth Halvorsen got the Rockies to the ninth, while rookies Zach Agnos picked up his first career save holding the Braves scoreless in the ninth.
It was a nice win for the Rockies before they head off to San Francisco with a 5-25 record. Colorado will start Kyle Freeland Thursday night in San Francisco, with the first pitch at 7:45 p.m. M.D.T.
“Hard fought win,” Bud Black said after the game. “When you’re not scoring runs, it takes a great pitching performance, and four guys did it today. Overall, we needed a game like this.”
Here’s three takeaways from Colorado’s much-needed win on Wednesday at Coors.
- Jordan Bird is really good
Bird has been the best middle reliever the Rockies have and he was again Wednesday. Bird ended the sixth inning after Dollander exited and then went scoreless in the seventh, as he struck out a pair. Bird, along with Halvorsen have been outstanding for much of the season.
- Toglia trending
It was only one hit, but Michael Toglia is trading in the right direction. It was another day getting on base with a double and he didn’t strike out. His average is now up to .223, and from where he started, things are certainly heading in the right direction and the Rockies should be excited about that.
- The good Dollander
After being chased in his last two games, Dollander was outstanding earning his second win of the season. Against Chris Sale and a tough Braves’ lineup, Dollander went 5.2 innings, with just two hits and one run, with four strikeouts. He left the game with a cracked fingernail but he was pitching outstanding and had great command. And when Dollander is dealing, the Rockies are so much better, and that was the case on Wednesday.
