The pitchers dominated Friday afternoon's spring training matchup between the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies, making for a fairly uneventful game.
Padres starter Randy Vasquez didn't allow a hit through 2.2 innings, walking two and striking out four.
Rockies All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman has struggled early in Cactus League play, but he belted his first home run of the spring off Ron Marinaccio to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth.
Former Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Triston McKenzie struck out three and walked two over two innings, looking solid as he works to bounce back with a new team.
The only run he allowed came on an RBI single by Rockies second baseman Adael Amador in the sixth inning.
Rockies starter Tanner Gordon continues building his case for a rotation spot, tossing two scoreless innings while walking one and striking out one.
News and notes from Colorado's 3-2 win over the Padres
- Griffin Herring made his Cactus League debut Friday afternoon. He was the centerpiece in last season's trade that sent third baseman Ryan McMahon to the Yankees. Herring allowed one run (not earned) on one hit while walking one batter and recording one strikeout.
- Zac Veen continues his late-game heroics, going 1-for-2 with a walk-off solo shot that secured the Rockies' sixth spring training victory. The most impressive thing about the home run was that it came off a well-located fastball on the outside corner—a pitch he drove 447 feet to dead center field.
- Adael Amador went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, pushing his spring average to .308.
- T.J. Rumfield has been on a heater lately, going 1-for-1 in his only at-bat Friday. He's now hitting .417 on the spring.
The Rockies return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Kansas City Royals, with Michael Lorenzen set to take the mound.
