The National League West is going to be really, really good this season. Perhaps a much-improved Colorado Rockies club will make the division that much better.
The Rockies have been on a roll in the Cactus League so far, and they proved to be resilient once again when they beat the defending World Series Champion Los Angelse Dodgers Thursday at Salt River Fields.
Again, not to make too much out of a spring training game, but, many starters played for half of Thursday’s game, and the fact that the Rockies shut out the Dodgers 2-0 speaks volumes to where Colorado is at at the end of the first month of spring training.
First off, I don’t care if it’s February or September, anytime the Rockies beat the Dodgers, it matters, at least to Colorado. And so, Thursday’s game was big for themindset of manager Bud Black’s team.
Secondly, Colorado’s much-maligned pitching staff took a big step forward with that victory. Seven Colorado pitchers combined to not only shut out the Dodgers, but tally 11 strikeouts on the afternoon. In a tight ballgame, the bullpen was spectacular for Colorado as both Tyler Kinley and Victor Vodnik continued to shine in the late innings.
And while the Rockies only scored two runs, they still hit well as they got eight hits off Dodger pitching. And big hits came from bigtime players as Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Gooodman both doubled in runs to lead the way. Among those scoring was Kyle Karros who was playing against his brother on Thursday. Kyle and Jared are the son of former MLB great Eric Karros.

The highlights from Thursday’s game were exciting to say the last, but again, the most important thing to come out of the contest is Colorado’s ability to win games. And whille a 6-1 record in the Cactus League may not mean much in the grand scheme of things, it has to be good for the confidence and morale in the clubhouse as opening day starts to get closer and closer.
The Rockies are right back on the diamond on Friday when they play the Cleveland Guardians in Goodyear at 1:05 p.m. M.S.T.
