After back-to-back losses to the Yankees in Denver, the Colorado Rockies had little time to get ready for the Chicago Cubs. And it showed in yet another Rockies’ offensive struggle.
In a Monday day game at Wrigley Field, the Rockies lost a pitcher’s dual to the Cubs, 3-1, as Colorado fell to a historic 9-45 on the season. It was the third straight try at 10 wins for the struggling Rockies.
For the second straight game, Mickey Moniak homered for the Rockies, but it wasn’t enough as Kyle Tucker drove in runs in the fifth and the seventh inning to help the Cubs overcome a strong pitching performance from Carson Palmquist, who allowed just three hits and two runs while striking out four.
Palmquist though, got little help from his offense. The Rockies had just five hits and one run, while striking out nine times, and leaving five men on base and going 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
The Rockies will look to bounce back Tuesday night when they face the Cubs again at 6:05 p.m. M.D.T. German Marquez starts for the Rockies, while Cade Horton gets the nod for the Cubs.
Here’s three takeaways from Monday’s game at Wrigley Field.
Bad on the road
It seems no matter where the Rockies play, they struggle. But they’ve won just three games on the road this season, which is absolutely awful. Colorado also has a team batting average of just .137 in road games this season.
Moniak delivers
It wasn’t just his second homer in as many days, but Monday showed that when Mickey Moniak is on, he’s really good. Moniak has 15 RBIs this season, and while his average isn’t what he was hoping for, he’s been a solid addition to a really good outfield.
Starting pitching wasted
The Rockies’ pitching struggles, but even when they don’t, they can’t seem to catch a break. Carson Palmquist had his best outing of his career Monday, and yet it mattered none, as the Rockies’ bullpen and offense didn’t hold him up. It just seems no matter what happens, the Rockies can’t catch a break.
