If the Colorado Rockies are going to turn this season around on the road, they’ll have to do better then they did Friday night in the opening game of a West Coast road swing.
And the ceiling isn’t too high after a horrific performance at the plate Friday night at Petco Park in San Diego, as they struck out 15 times and were shut out 8-0 against the Padres. The Rox managed just three hits in what continues to be a brutal start offensively this season.
The Rockies’ bullpen struggled again as well. The Rockies and Padres were scoreless when the Rockies gave up five runs in the fifth inning, and that was the game as Colorado fell to 3-10 on the season, and failed to follow-up on a win for the third time this season.
The Rockies will try again on Saturday when rookie phenom Chase Dollander takes the mound against Kyle Hart. The game at Petco Park is set for 6:40 p.m. M.D.T.
Before the Rockies play game two of their series with the Padres, here’s some takeaways from Friday night’s loss.
3. No momentum
After beating the Brewers on Thursday, the Rockies just couldn’t capitalize. In fact, with three hits, the Rockies took a bad step back. They managed just one extra base hit and were shut out for the first time this season.
2. Kyle Farmer is winning
The Nolan Jones trade is still looking like a mistake. Kyle Farmer had all three of Colorado’s hits on Friday night, and he is crushing it at second base filling in for the injured Thairo Estrada. And since Farmer has been so good, the Rockies have seen very little of Tyler Freeman who came over from the Guardians in the Jones deal. Instead, Farmer has cemented himself as the everyday infielder for the Rockies as he continues to be red-hot.
1. Toglia isn’t snapping out of it
Sure, Michael Toglia had a good day on Thursday, but he turned right around and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Friday night. Toglia is now batting .191 with just one RBI. He’s also struck out 21 times in 42 at-bats this season. It’s safe to say, Toglia is in a slump of epic proportions and the Rockies and manager Bud Black don’t really have an answer for it.
