The Colorado Rockies clearly left their offense in Denver. Or at least on the plane. No matter where they left what little offense they had this season, they sure didn’t bring it with them to San Diego.
The Rockies suffered their second straight shutout at the hands of the Padres Saturday night at Petco Park. One night after losing 8-0, the Rockies were shut out 2-0 as they fell to 3-10 on the season and are already a whopping 8.5 games out of first place in the N.L. West.
While Friday night’s game was ugly all the way around, Saturday was different is the pitching for Colorado was solid. Chase Dollander made his second start of his career, and while he gave up solo homers to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jason Heyward, and that was it. Dollander just go no help from Colorado’s floundering offense.
The Rockies managed just four hits and one walk, and were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Rockies also struck out nine times after going down 15 times the night before.
To say Colorado is in a nightmarish slump right now would be an understatement as the Rockies face the Padres again on Sunday.as Kyle Freeland faces Michael King at 2:10 p.m. M.D.T.
And while Saturday night was an ugly night for Colorado, which is becoming all too frequent, here’s three bright spots from the game.
3. Kyle Farmer
Farmer had all three Colorado hits on Friday night, while he doubled on Saturday. Farmer has been on fire and is doing a great job defensively as well. He’s quickly emerged as a player the Rockies might want to invest more in as time goes on.
2. Zac Veen
Veen moved from leadoff all the way down to ninth on Saturday, but he picked up another hit, and overall, he’s really been playing well since being called up. There’s been bumps along the way, but, Veen continues to flash his immense talent and he did again on Saturday.
1. Dollander is just fine
Dollander got the loss, but, he allowed just three hits and struck out seven. Yes, he gave up two solo homers, but, if you only give up two runs to the Padres in 5.2 innings, you’ll take that. Dollander got no help from the offense Saturday night, but, it was another quality start, and it was against the potent Padres, which again gives Rockies’ brass, and the fans plenty of hope that they’ve already found their future ace.
