Don't look now, but the young Colorado Rockies are 1-0 in Cactus League games.
On Friday afternoon at Salt River Fields, the Rockies thrashed the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-8 thanks to Brenton Doyle's monster grand slam midway through the contest.
Doyle's homer, which pushed the Rockies to a spring trainiing debut victory was just one of many highlights on the day at Talking Stick. But not to be overshadowed, Doyle's grand slam is signifigant because he's batting leadoff for Colorado, and production like that will go a long way towards an improved Rockies' offense.
The offense was a bright spot for manager Bud Black's team on Friday as 17 players stepped to the plate to combine for 12 hits and 12 runs. And that offense was productive even without Ezequiel Tovar or Micheal Toglia playing in the Cactus League opener, Among the 12 hits was a 2-hit performance from third basemen Kyle Karros. The 22-year-old also reached base three times in total, while the Rockies saw other prospects have strong at-bats as well.

Starting off the game was Bradley Blalock, who looked sharp in his two innings of work as he recored a pair of strikeouts. He was indeed a bright spot for a staff that used eight young pitchers, many of whom will be in the minor leagues when camp ends next month.
But as strong as the Rockies were at times Friday, the biggest bright spot of the first game of spring training was their resolve. Often times, spring training games hold little meaning, especially in February, but, it was clearly obvious that, the Rockies were there to win on Friday, and that attitude will resonate in the clubhouse, and with the fans as the big league club is put together for the upcoming season.
Colorado (1-0) annd Arizona (0-1) meet again Saturday at 1:10 p.m. at Salt River Fields.
Notes: On Thursday, Coloorado signed veteran lefty Scott Alexander to a one-year deal with 2 million dollars. Alexander had an ERA of 2.56 for Oakland in 20
