Rockies shockingly option potential fifth starter in rotation

Tanner Gordon's standout spring training performance earned him a spot in the starting rotation.

AdaelĀ Amador and Tanner Gordon were among the Rockies' cuts from Tuesday as the team reduces its roster in preparation for Opening Day next Friday in Miami.

It's important to share that Gordon was on track to complete the Rockies' rotation following a strong spring training, even with the introduction of a new two-seam fastball and adjustments to his changeup grip.

He posted a 1.64 ERA over 11 innings pitchedĀ this spring, including a recent four inning performance against the Angels where he allowed one run on four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Gordon competed with Rockies pitchers RyanĀ FeltnerĀ and former top prospect ChaseĀ DollanderĀ for the final rotation spot.

Given his improved performance, I expected Colorado, with their new approach, to keep Gordon on the Opening Day roster. That would have surprised many, especially withĀ DollanderĀ on the outside looking in.

DollanderĀ has had an up-and-down spring training, most recently giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out four in 3.2 innings on Tuesday.

DollanderĀ possesses the tools of aĀ top-tierĀ starting pitcher, boasting a fastball in the 97-100 mph range and a devastatingĀ wipeoutĀ slider. However, command issues have surfaced, with seven walks allowed in 14 spring innings.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the Rockies will lean onĀ DollanderĀ as their fifth starter, especially given RyanĀ Feltner'sstruggles since returning from an injury that sidelined him for most of the 2025 season, as he also competed for the position.

FeltnerĀ started Tuesday's exhibition game against the Mariners, giving up three runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Similar toĀ Dollander,Ā FeltnerĀ possesses good swing-and-miss potential, but his command has been inconsistent.

FeltnerĀ has allowed ten free passes this spring in 11.2 innings pitched, but he's demonstrated the ability to strike out batters with 14 strikeouts.Ā I've always seenĀ FeltnerĀ as a potential bullpen arm with high upside, especially with his wipeout stuff, but the walks have been a concern.

While Gordon performed well inĀ spring training, Colorado is likely prioritizingĀ Dollander'sĀ development and avoiding a demotion that could damage his confidence. It's important to remember that during spring training, players are often experimenting with new pitches and grips, rather than focusing solely on the numbers.
