The atmosphere was so Coors Field. The end result however, well that was so the Colorado Rockies.

The much-anticipated home-opener for the Rockies was played mostly in freezing temps, and even some snow, which, is nothing new for Rockies fans. Unfortunately, neither was fans watching the Rockies lose to the A’s in extra innings.

Despite a bit more offense in Friday’s first home game of 2025, the Rockies’ bullpen couldn’t do the job as the A’s scored three runs in the 11th inning in a 6-3 win. The disappointed Rockies fell to 1-6 on the young season.

The weather would end up being the most memorable part of Friday’s game, though the Rockies also banged out 11 hits, and Ryan Feltner did strike out four in his home debut. However, Alex Chivilli blew a lead for the season time this season, as the A’s broke open a 3-3 game in the 11th and Colorado had no answer.

It was still a festive day at Coors Field as fans were not scared off by the weather. But in the end, it was more of the same for a Rockies’ team which entered 2025 with such high hopes, but, has squashed much of that enthusiasm in the first seven games of the new season.

Colorado will look to get back on track on Saturday night when the Rockies meet the A’s again at 6:10 p.m. at Coors Field. German Marquez will start for the Rockies while J.P. Sears takes the mound for the A’s (3-5).

Before Saturday night’s game, here’s three top takes from Friday’s home opener.

3. Can the Rockies hit home runs?

It was nice to see Michael Toglia get a couple of hits on Friday. He was really in a huge slump. But, did we overestimate the kind of power hitter Toglia might be? And as a team, Colorado has but three homers this season. Yes, Friday’s weather was awful, but, maybe the Rockies’ sluggers need to get the Torpedo Bats to Denver in a hurry.

2. Big day for Tovar

All was not lost in the home opener. Rockies fans should be excited about Ezequiel Tovar going 3-for-5 with a triple and a run while reaching base four times. Tovar has also been so special on defense, and it was a glimmer of hope for Colorado fans that Tovar shined in the home opener, because, the Rockies really need a super star.

1. Biggest news is Chase Dollander being brought up

On Thursday, Bud Black announced that Dollander was coming up from Albuquerque to make his major league debut on Sunday. The 23-year-old phenom will give the Rockies’ four-man rotation a bit of a rest, as Austin Gomber obviously isn’t ready to return. So to be honest, the Dollander news really overshadowed anything the Rockies did on the field in the home opener, and it’s going to make Sunday’s game really exciting.
