Paul DePodesta returned to baseball this past offseason after taking over for the Rockies, who just endured one of their worst seasons in franchise history.
Colorado will rely on his analytical approach and data-driven culture to improve after winning only 43 games the previous season. He, along with new General Manager Josh Byrnes, addressed numerous weaknesses in free agency with veteran signings on both the pitching and hitting sides.
Paul joined MLB Network host Brian Kenny Friday afternoon to discuss his transition back to the big leagues after serving as the Cleveland Browns Chief Strategy Officer for the past nine years.
Kenny questioned DePodesta on several topics, including the evolution of baseball since his departure, the contrasting cultures of MLB and NFL, the number of games played and roster sizes, and his perspective on the ABS system, emphasizing his strategic approach to challenges.
One of the more interesting topics discussed was Paul's plan to attack Coors Field and use its unique conditions to their advantage.
"“Look, the most obvious thing is that the outfield has the most acreage of any ballpark in baseball. So we have to be able to defend that acreage. And, you know, with our outfielders, but we also have to take advantage of it at the plate. We have to be able to put the ball in play more.”"
Paul is spot on about both of these points. That's why he acquired Jake McCarthy to pair with Brenton Doyle, covering the outfield ground effectively. Colorado also struggled to make contact last season, finishing second in the league with a 25.9% strikeout rate. Their .237 batting average ranked 23rd in all of baseball.
He also noted the potential for extra bases at the ballpark, given the large outfield. Colorado has expressed an interest in increasing their base-stealing attempts this season, where they ranked 23rd in the league last year with 87 stolen bases.
The new leadership and recent changes have brought a glimmer of hope to a team that has struggled since their 2018 playoff run. It will be interesting to watch this season unfold from an analytical standpoint, particularly how Colorado performs at Coors Field compared to on the road.
