Rockies have a long way to go if they want to rise in the MLB power rankings

Colorado has some trends going in the wrong direction

Not surprising, the Colorado Rockies aren’t on anyone’s radar as far as the top half of Major League Baseball is concerned.

That said, the Rockies weren’t expecting to already be lumped in with the worst teams in baseball after the first weekend of the regular season.

And yet, here we are.

In the first MLB Power Rankings of 2025 released by the Bleacher Report, the Rockies are ranked 29th, only one spot ahead of the lowly Chicago White Sox.

Of course, half of the Rockies’ N.L. West Division rivals are in the top three as the Dodgers and Padres are ranked 1-2 after the first weekend, while the much-improved Diamondbacks come in at No. 5 and the Giants sit at No. 14. So the fact that all of the Rockies’ division mates are off to a stronger start is somewhat demoralizing.

Now, that’s not to say the Rockies can’t, and won’t rise up in the MLB ranks as the season goes on. But, some ugly trends are already showing after four games and the Rockies need to reserve those trends if improvements are going to be made.

The first trend that needs to be halted immediately is the poor performance from the bullpen. Colorado has the fifth-best starting ERA so far this season, but, the Rockies have still lost three of the four games off of those quality starts. That shows that the bullpen is really struggling, and has given up three leads. That needs to change in a hurry.

Another trend that needs to be reversed is Colorado’s inability to get runners in. Colorado is one of the worst teams in baseball in RISP right now, and the Rockies need to start taking advantage of the hitting that has been decent thus far.

Lastly, the Rockies should be a power-hitting team this season. And yet, they have two home runs so far, and neither came off the bat of power hitters Ryan McMahon, Kris Bryant or Michael Toglia. Maybe the Rockies need to order some Torpedo Bats, but whatever the case may be, they need to start hitting home runs.

Again, Colorado was picked to finish near the bottom of baseball, but, the fact that the Rockies are already ranked 29th out of 30 teams means they’re off to a horrible start, and they can’t wait long to turn things around.
