Pitching has been a massive point of emphasis in spring training for the Colorado Rockies. So even in a Cactus League loss, the Rockies can see all the highlights when the pitching staff performs well.

That was certainly the case on Wednesday as the Rockies surrendered just four hits and one run in a 1-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields.

In spite of the defeat, which, at this point in spring training, means very little, the Rockies’ pitchers were outstanding. Starter Jake Woodford gave up an earl;y run, but still had two strikeouts, while Bradley Blalock had yet another great outing with two clean innings and two strikeouts, while Jake Bird finished off the D-Backs with two more scoreless innings.

Together, the pitching staff was really good for Bud Black, and that comes on the heels of a scintillating performance from Chase Dollander on Tuesday.

The pitching didn’t get much help from the offense, which left seven runners in scoring position. Brenton Doyle and Jordan Beck collected two hits each, but, the day wound up belonging to the Rockies’ pitchers, and, at this point in March, that’s perhaps the most important thing.

The Rockies fell to 13-12 in Cactus League play. They play the Rangers on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
