As quickly as the Colorado Rockies’ offense got hot, it went ice cold. Just one night after collecting 19 hits and scoring 14 runs against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Rockies went in the opposite direction as they were shut out in Arizona.
Sunday afternoon at Chase Field, the Rockies struck out 14 times in a 1-0 shutout loss to the D-Backs. The offensive performance overshadowed a strong start by rookie Chase Dollander, who struck out six and allowed just one run in 4.2 innings.
Dollander did give up a solo homer in the first inning and took the loss, but he got no help from his offense, as the Rockies managed just three hits on the day.
The loss dropped the Rockies to 8-38 this season as they host the Phillies starting Monday night at Coors Field.
Here’s three takeaways from Sunday’s loss to the D-Backs.
- Even when the Rockies pitch well, they can’t catch a break
Dollander giving up one solo homer shouldn’t be a death sentence. Add to that the Rockies’ bullpen throwing four scoreless innings and giving up just one hit, and the Rockies should have had a great chance to win. And they need to win when they get a rare pitching outing like they did on Sunday.
- Too many K’s
The Rockies struck out again way too many times. They fanned 14 times to be exact, and that’s a trend that’s unfortunately stuck with Colorado this season.
- Beck, Goodman and Farmer, who else?
The Rockies only had three hits on Sunday, and they came to no one’s surprise, by Jordan Beck, Hunter Goodman and Kyle Farmer. That trio has been the best hitters on the club, so it’s no shocker that when the team struggles, they still hit.
