3 Rockies who will have a great series against the Los Angeles Dodgers

The Colorado Rockies are set to begin a four-game road series today against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Aside from a disastrous game on Monday night against the Brewers, the Rockies have been playing pretty good baseball as of late, winning in extra innings game on Tuesday night followed by a seventh-inning rally yesterday that forced extra innings. Unfortunately, the Rockies were on the losing side of yesterday's game after a rare defensive error by Ezequiel Tovar.

Move on and forget, should be the message Manager Bud Black should be telling his team as they need to be in the right mindset heading into a series against a very good Dodgers team that has more than just post-season aspirations. The Dodgers have a team that could make a special run in Oct. and win a World Series for the first time since 2020.

However, the Dodgers have to foucs on winning the division first as they're in a tight race for first place. Fortunately for them, bitter rival, the San Francisco Giants just lost two games of a three game series to the Los Angeles Angels and the Arizona Diamondbacks who started the year red hot have finally started to cool down in the hot month of Aug. as they have not won a game since the MLB trade deadline and were just swept in a three game series against the Dodgers to start the week.

The Dodgers currently have a six-game lead in the National League West and the Rockies who are 22.5 games out of the division are looking to play spoiler ball in Los Angeles this weekend. If the Rockies can fend off the Dodgers, they will be doing wonders for the Giants and Diamondbacks. With an upset in mind this weekend, I decided too look at just what three Rockies could have a breakout series in LA.

1. Austin Gomber

Austin Gomber might be having a career resurrection in 2023. The left-handed pitcher from Winter Garden Florida, has been dominant over the last two months. Since June 14. Gomber has pitched with a 3.19 ERA.

In his last start, he helped the Rockies win a road series against the Cardinals for the first time since 2009. In that game, Gomber went and put up six shutout innings in a 1-0 victory. Gomber did not have a lot of strikeouts in last Sunday's game but did manage to keep hitters guessing and was getting hitters out.

Right now, Gomber leads the Rockies in wins (9) and strikeouts (79) and is starting to hone in on becoming the future ace of the staff.

With being the hottest pitcher in the Rockies pitching staff over the last two months, the team is hopeful he is starting to become the guy we all saw on the Cardinals in 2018 when he went 6-2 while starting in 11 games.

Surprisingly, Gomber has never pitched against the Dodgers despite being on the Rockies roster for the last three years. He has been a better road pitcher in 2023 which makes me guess he will have a solid evening on Friday night as he is expected to face off against Lance Lynn.

2. Nolan Jones

If you don't know the name yet, remember it now. Young outfielder Nolan Jones has been phenomenal since being brought up in late May.

Over the last 15 games, Jones has been a run-scoring machine for the Rockies with a total of three home runs, 9 RBI's, 15 hits, and a .288 batting average.

On Tuesday night, he was the young hero Rockies fans have been desperate to see as he delivered huge for the team with a two-home run evening that helped give the team a 7-3 bizarre victory over the Brewers where the Rockies had three straight runs from walks in the 10th inning against Milwaukee.

Jones, is looking for redemption this weekend after immensley struggling against the Dodgers at home in June. During that series, he only recorded one hit and drew three walks.

While Rockies hitters typically thrive at home and struggle on the road, it has been a polar opposite for Jones. This year, he is hitting .295 with six home runs, 17 RBI's, eight doubles, 13 walks and an OPS of .918 on road games. I would expect Jones to continue his road dominance this weekend against Los Angeles and really start to make himself stand out as a future star in this sport.
