The Colorado Rockies are having a lot of trouble driving in runs. That was obvious again on Monday afternoon.
In their first National League game of 2025, the Rockies dropped a 6-1 game to the Philadelphia Phillies. Colorado once again left a lot on its plate as the Rockies left five runners in scoring position. Thus far this season, Colorado is dead last in the National League in RISP, and that was the case again Monday, as the Rockies’ lone run came from a solo homer by Hunter Goodman. Meanwhile, stars Brenton Doyle, Ryan McMahon and Ezequiel Tovar all left men on base as Colorado managed just six hits.
Colorado’s bullpen also faltered yet again. After a great start by German Marquez, the Rockies gave up six runs in the final three innings. Thus far this season, Colorado’s bullpen has a combined ERA of over six.
The loss dropped the Rockies to 1-3 on the season. They have their first off day Tuesday, before restarting the series against the Phillies on Wednesday when Kyle Freeland gets the nod. That game will start at 4:45 p.m. M.D.T.
Here’s three takes from Monday’s loss in Philly.
3. Hunter Goodman is on fire
What a decision by Bud Black to keep Goodman in the day-to-day. He started his third game at catcher on Monday, and hit a homer. Goodman thus far has an extra base hit in every game, and has by far been the Rockies’ best hitter.

2. Doyle breaks out
If the Rockies are gong to have any chance at improvement this season, they can’t afford Doyle to slump. And while he couldn’t get any runs in on Monday, he did get three hits, and Doyle on base is huge for Colorado’s struggling offense.
1. Another brilliant start
Plenty of questions surrounded German Marquez coming into 2025. He was up and down in the spring, but on Monday, he had a strong showing, as he held the powerful Phillies scoreless through six innings. Marquez allowed just four hits and struck out four and handed Colorado’s struggling bullpen a 1-0 lead. Marquez’ strong outing is the third game this season in which a Rockies’ starter has given his team the lead when he was pulled from the game. So, while Colorado has little to show for it yet, the Rockies’ starters are showing really good things so far this season.
