Despite the overall record, the Colorado Rockies had been getting stellar starts from their starting pitchers, including Kyle Freeland on opening day.
That all changed on Wednesday in Philadelphia.
Freeland struggled in his second start of the year, giving up nine hits and three runs in a 5-1 loss to the Phillies. It was honestly Colorado’s first start that wasn’t a quality start, as the Rockies came in with the fifth-best starting pitcher ERA in the league.
The Rockies’ bullpen and offense continued to struggle as well, as Alex Chivilli gave up to more runs, and the Rockies managed just four hits on the entire night as they fell to a dismal 1-5 on the season.
Colorado ends its season-opening road trip against the Phillies on Thursday when Antonio Senzatela takes the mound. With the first pitch at 11:05 a.m. M.D.T.
Here’s the top three takeaways from Wednesday’s loss.
The Rockies are just not producing runs, at all
Colorado has been terrible with runners in scoring position, and they were again on Wednesday, as they were 0-for-4. And despite Kris Bryant picking up his first hit of 2025, the Rockies are getting almost no production from the middle of the lineup.
Seth Halvorsen is solid
Colorado’s bullpen has been anything but good this season, but Halvorsen has been the exception. In his second appearance of 2025, he got the Rockies out of a jam, and finished strong. In a bullpen that has a ton of question marks, Halvorsen isn’t one of them.
Goodman is great
It can’t be overstated how good Hunter Goodman has been. Making his fourth start at catcher, Goodman smacked his second homer of the season, and went 2-for-3 with a double as well. To say he has been Colorado’s biggest offensive weapon is putting it mildly. In reality, he’s been their only weapon.
