Just when you think things can’t get any worse for the Colorado Rockies, they did.
Playing in their third doubleheader of the young season Thursday at Coors Field, the Rockies were swept by the Detroit Tigers, as Colorado is once again officially are now off to the worse start to a season in Major League history.
Game One of the double dip was over quickly as the Tigers two in the first, five in the second and two in the third inning. Kyle Freeland gave up 11 hits and was chased after just three innings.
Offensively, the Rockies garnered just four hits as Jordan Beck had a triple and an RBI and Mickey Moniak doubled. Hunter Goodman also drove in a run, but it was way too little, and way too late in a 10-2 loss.
And just a little bit after Game One ended, Game Two turned out to be just as bad.
The Rockies actually led 1-0 until the Tigers put up five runs in the third and never looked back in an 11-1 win. Tanner Gordon made his first start for Colorado and it didn’t go well as he gave up seven runs and nine hits and six innings. The Rockies managed just five hits, and couldn’t score as they left eight runners on base.
Over the course of 18 innings on Thursday, the Rockies were 1-for10 with runners in scoring position. They also struck out 15 times as they dipped to an abysmal 6-31 this season.
“We’re playing bad baseball all the way around,” an emotional Freeland said after Game One to MLB.com. Pitching, fielding, hitting, it’s all bad.
Freeland though also made a plea to Rockies’ fans.
“Keep believing in us,” he said while fighting back tears. Keep riding”
As the Rockies continue to struggle, that’s going to be tough, but, they’ll try and get better as they host the Padres for three games starting Friday night at 6:40 p.m. M.D.T at Coors Field. Antonio Senzatela will take the hill for the Rockies as they try and snap a six-game losing skid.
