It's not too late: Two keys to the Rockies turning it around this weekend

Colorado has two more chances against the Athletics, but they have to start hitting

The start to the 2025 season has been a little rough on the Colorado Rockies. And their home-opener was no different.

On Friday, the Rockies and their fans braved 11 innings of cold and snow only to see their beloved home team lose to the Athletics in disappointing fashion.

The loss dropped the Rockies to a dismal 1-6 on the season, and they’re already in dead last in the N.L. West by a mile, with April only being a few days old.

Still, there’s hope. Longterm hope says, in baseball, the Rockies have more than enough time to turn it all around. After all, it is only April.

There’s also hope in the short-term. If the Rockies can win their next two games at Coors Field, then, things will look just a little brighter. And to win those two games, here are two major factors the Rockies need.

  • Torpedo Bats, literally and figuratively

The Rockies are hitting just .216 for the season. They’re averaging less then two runs per game. They are slugging a horrific .308 and their OPS is just .585. Those are cringe worthy numbers for sure. Add to that the fact Michael Toglia doesn’t have a home run, the team has a total of just three dingers and backup infielder Kyle Farmer leads the club with a whopping three RBIs, and it’s easy to see why fans are already in full blown panic mode about the offense. So there’s no time to waste. If Colorado wants to win the series against the A’s and get this season back on track, the Rockies need to start scoring runs, quit leaving men on base and start blaming some homers out of homer friendly Coors Field. They are certainly capable, especially against A’s starting pitchers J.P. Sears and Joey Estes. Hopefully, Colorado got their shipment of Torpedo bats, and even if the Rockies didn’t hopefully, they just wake up.

  • Chase Dollander needed to be the star

Despite the slump the Rockies are in, fans were excited on Thursday when Bud Black announced that Dollander was coming up from AAA to make his first major league start on Sunday. The timing couldn’t have been better as Sunday afternoon games are exciting at Coors Field. The weather is also supposed to improve by Sunday, so the stage is set for Dollander’s debut. Now, there’s certainly pressure on the phenom and former top Rockies’ pick to deliver, but he has the goods. He has a high 90’s fastball and top tier command of his breaking pitches. He was up and down in spring training, but when he was good, he was pretty much unhittable. He’s also got youth on his side. Dollander’s ceiling is as high as it gets, and he is literally what the Rockies need. They need a new hero. Of course, Black hasn’t said what his longterm plans are for Dollander, but, short-term, he can give the franchise and the fanbase a shot in the arm with an electric performance on Sunday, and that’s what the ball club desperately need.
