The Colorado Rockies are trying just about everything to get the season jump-started. So far however, nothing has worked, and that includes bringing up top prospects.
So far this season, the Rockies have already called up Chase Dollander, Zac Veen, Adeal Amador and Bradley Blalock from AAA, as well as Braxton Fullford, and several bullpen prospects. And yet, many of those call-ups really haven’t worked out.
Veen and Fullford have already been returned to Albuquerque, while Amador is hitting just .200 with two hits and one homer with the Rockies. His glove though is why he’s in Denver, as the Rockies’ infield has been decimated by injuries.
Dollander hasn’t fared much better, however, he’s literally the No. 1 overall prospect and he’s needed in the Rockies’ rotation, so he’s not going anywhere either.
Yes, like everything else in Colorado, calling up the kids hasn’t made much of a difference as Colorado is off to one of the worst starts in Major League Baseball history.
That doesn’t mean the Rockies should stop trying however, and though they have a loaded outfield, it might be time to give Yanquiel Fernandez his chance to make a difference.
Fernandez , just 22 years old, is Colorado’s No. 6 overall prospect and he had a strong spring in big-league camp. However, being as young as he is, there was just no room for him on the Opening Day roster. And yet, Colorado’s roster is so different now, it may be time to make room for Fernandez.
At AAA so far, Fernandez has blasted seven home runs, which is two more then anyone on Colorado’s big-league roster. He’s driven in 15, and while he hasn’t hit for average, Fernandez is a future 30-homerun hitter in the big leagues, and let’s face it, the Rockies need offense.

Yes, so many prospects have already had a turn, it’s getting close to time to see what Fernandez can do. He at least could be a DH, and get a turn in the outfield once in a while. At the very least, Fernandez should be the next man up when another injury occurs.
After all, Fernandez is crushing it in AAA, and at this point, what do the Rockies have to lose?
