The Colorado Rockies are floundering. And while a big reason why might be they’re not as good as we hopped they’d be, injuries haven’t helped matters any.
Colorado is desperately awaiting the return of star shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, who has been out several weeks now with a thigh bruise. Tovar has been out since April 19, and the club lists his status as TBD, but, the Rockies also reported that Tovar took batting and fielding practice on May 7, and he ran the bases on May 8.
Tovar is one of the most talented players on the roster and the Rockies miss him dearly, but, he’s also not the only player that was slated to make a big impact for the Rockies this season that’s hurt right now.
In fact, there’s many,
The Rockies lost newly acquired second basemen Thairo Estrada to a broken arm during spring training. Estrada recently did fielding drills at Coors Field on May 7, and he ran the bases and did fielding drills on May 8. His return though is still in question.
Estrada and Tovar were supposed to be a great combo up the middle this season, but, both are on the shelf and that hurts.
Most recently, starter Ryan Feltner went on the IL as well. Feltner had been Colorado’s best starting pitcher until back spasms sidelined him on May 7. Feltner has a 4.56 ERA which is the best in the rotation. On top of that, Austin Gomber was slated to be a starter in 2025, and he’s yet to appear, and has been on the 60-day IL.
Of course, Kris Bryant is out yet again as well, while receiver Victor Vodnik went on the IL in April with a shoulder injury, and infielders Adam Schunk and Tyler Freeman are also both currently on the IL. Freeman was brought over in the trade for Nolan Jones, while Schunk was called up when Tovar went down.
Of course, injuries aren’t the only reason why the Rockies are off to one of the worst starts in Major League Baseball history, but, the list above shows just how fragile this roster already was. No, Colorado can’t afford to lose players like Tovar and Feltner, and yet, here they are, so the struggle gets worse.
Let’s just hope however, when players start coming back from the IL, it’s worth the way.
What did we learn today? A thread.
