Where do the Colorado Rockies go from here? Well, we’re all going to find out right away.
One day after the Rockies fired manager Bud Black, they’ll be right back in action as they visit the Texas Rangers tonight at 6:05 p.m. M.D.T. The game will mark the managerial debut of former third-base coach Warren Schaeffer, who was named interim skipper for the remainder of the season. And all Schaeffer inherited was a Rockies’ squad that is 7-33, had three different losing streaks of eight games or more this season, and is dealing with horrible starting pitching, abysmal hitting and a deep list of injured players.
In his first game as the Rockies’ manager, Schaeffer will send out rookie phenom Chase Dollander in hopes off his team building on some nice momentum from Sunday afternoon when the Rockies beat the Padres 9-3. In that win, German Marquez got his first win of the season after he pitched seven innings of 3-hit ball, while Seth Halvorsen finished things off in one of Colorado’s best pitching performances of the season.
Schaeffer will also hope the good offensive output continues over from Sunday. Hunter Goodman went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Jordan Beck had a pair of hits to extend his streak to 10 games.
Colorado will need a lot more of that if things are going to get better, but it will certainly be interesting how the team responds to the Black dismissal.
Game Two between the Rockies and Rangers is set for Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. as Kyle Freeland battles Jack Leiter. The series finale will be Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. as Antonio Senzatela faces Patrick Corbin.
The Rockies head to Arlington to start a six-game road trip. From Texas, they’ll head to Phoenix for a three-game weekend against the rival Arizona Diamondbacks.
