It’s going to be a big homecoming for the Colorado Rockies, in more ways then one.
First, the Rockies are returning to Coors Field this weekend for more then just a three-game set with the Cincinnati Reds. No, the Rockies are home hoping that Denver will help them turn things around after a rough three-game road trip in Kansas City.
Of course, the Rockies are also returning home for a very special weekend as they celebrate 30 years of games at Coors Field. The 30th anniversary of the first game ever played at Coors Field will be held on Saturday when the Rockies meet the Reds at 1:10 p.m. M.D.T.
That game will feature a ton of festivities, including a tribute to one of the franchise’s most beloved players, former outfielder and Blake Street Bomber, Dante Bichette. Fans should arrive early to watch Dante throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game. Fans can enjoy a $5 throwback concessions combo and the exclusive anniversary lager while reliving key moments from the Rockies’ 1995 postseason run with ‘90s music, scoreboard visuals, and special game-used baseballs.
Of course, the series is also important as the Rockies try to reverse their horrible start to 2025. Colorado is last in almost every offensive category in Major League Baseball and is on pace to lose 131 games this season.
The Rockies are also dealing with injuries, including a key one to shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, who is currently on the 10-day IL.
Pitching has also been an issue at times, but the Rockies are facing a Red’s squad that isn’t too good offensively, either. The weekend’s pitching matchups included Kyle Freeland taking the mound tonight against Andrew Abbott for the Reds. Freeland is 0-4 this season with a 4.85 ERA, but he has had three quality starts.
On Saturday, Antonio Senzatela will take a 1-3 record and a 4.81 ERA to the mound for the 30th Anniversary Game. Hunter Green will start for the Reds. Finally, on Sunday, Colorado will send out Ryan Feltner, who has been the Rockies’ best pitcher this season, against Nick Lodolo. Feltner is 1-3, but he has a 3.86 ERA with 21 strikeouts.
The Reds come into the series with the Rockies at 12-13 overall and in third place in the National League Central. Star Elly De La Cruz leads the team with five homers and 22 RBI’s, while Gavin Lux is also off to a strong start.
Meanwhile, the Rockies are now 4-20, they’re off to their worst start in franchise history, and rank last in many offensive categories.
Colorado also announced moves over the week in Kansas City, including sending Zac Veen back to AAA, and putting pitcher Victor Vodnik on the 15-day IL. They also sent down Luis Peralta and Evan Justice, and brought back up Jaden Hill.
Colorado starts a their homestead tonight with a 6:40 p.m. M.D.T. first pitch against the Reds. Saturday’s game and Sunday’s game each start at 1:10 p.m. Colorado is also home to host the Atlanta Braves Tuesday-Thursday.
