For the second straight week, the Colorado Rockies found a way to salvage a series.

After some horrific losses to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Rockies bounced back on getaway day as they beat the Brewers 7-2 in a much-needed victory Thursday afternoon at sunny Coors Field.

Offensively, the Rockies rode the wave of hot-hitting Brenton Doyle, who drove in five runs and homered for the third time this season. Michael Toglia also performed well at the plate as did Ryan McMahon, while Zac Even picked up his second extra-base hit of his young career. Overall, Colorado’s offense broke out for 11 hits and seven runs, just like they did back on Sunday against the Athletics.

Colorado also saw Ryan Feltner work six innings giving up just three hits one run while striking out seven. It was a much-needed quality start, and even more importantly,. The Rockies’ bullpen allowed one run the rest of the way.

So, while it was just one win, and was only their win of the season, the Rockies needed it as they improved to 3-9, and hopefully it will give them some momentum heading into the California road swing.

Colorado plays at San Diego (10-9) on Friday as German Marquez gets th eball and takes on Nick Pivetta. It’s the first of three games against the Padres, and next week, the Rockies move on to Los Angeles for their first three games this season against the Dodgers.

But before we get to tomorrow’s game at San Diego, here’s three bright spots from the Rockiers’ therapeutic win against the Brewers at Coors Field.

3. Zac Veen

He may have only gotten one hit, but Veen is already hitting in the 2-hiole and has started all three games since being called up. He’s clearly making a difference and has the confidence of Bud Black right now. It was a great move for the Rockies, at least in the short term.

2. More of this Michael

Michael Toglia was mired in a brutal slump, but maybe he broke out on Thursday. He was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Toglia has still yet to hit a home run, but sometimes just getting a couple hits can jumpstart even a big power hitter like Toglia. And let’s face it, if the Rockies are going to improve at all, Toglia has to be a part of it.

1. Better Bullpen

Just like Toglia, the Rockies need the bullpen to pitch consistently if they are going to make any type of move this season. It hasn’t been good this season, but, they were on Thursday. And for the third time this year, Seth Halvorsen did a great job in the ninth. Colorado has the arms in the pen, they just have to keep proving it.

The Rockies are back on the field Friday when they play in San Diego. The game starts at 7:40 p.m. M.D.T.
