Off to a rough start in 2025, Coors Field might be just what the doctor ordered for the Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies will be home Friday afternoon to take on the Athletics for their home-opener. Colorado has been on the road for its first seven games, and now, it’s finally time to get back to the Mile High.
Of course, spring in Denver is a crap shoot, and bad weather is in the forecast for this weekend’s series against the team formerly from Oakland. But weather is also what makes the Rockies such a beloved franchise, and the Rockies are expecting another historic home-opening weekend.
So, in honor of the Rockies return to Denver, here’s a look back at some of the most historic home-openers in Colorado franchise history.
5. Kyle Freeland debut
In 2017, Colorado native Kyle Freeland made his Major League debut for the Rockies in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers. It was a special day for Freeland, who pitched for the first time in front of hometown friends and family.
4. The Rockies walk-off the Padres
In the 2005 home opener, the Rockies scored four runs with two outs in the ninth to beat Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman and the Padres as Clint Barnes hit a two-run walk-off homer in a thrilling win at Coors Field.
3. Birth of the Bombers
In the 1997 home opener, the Rockies tallied 19 hits in a 13-2 win over the Reds at Coors Field. The Blake Street Bombers, including Vinny Castilla, Dante Bichette, Larry Walker and veteran Andres Galaraga ended up having the one of the most historic seasons in franchise history.
2. Opening Day at Mile High
A day Coloradoans will never forget. In 1993, the Rockies franchise began and their home opener in front of more then 80,000 fans was a success as they beat the Expos 11-4.
1. Rockies rock Coors field for the first time
No one will ever forget the first baseball game ever played at Coors Field on April 26, 1995. In the historic home opener, the Rockies went 14 innings with the Mets before Bichette ended the game with a two-run, walk-off homer in an 11-9 win.
