If the Colorado Rockies are going to succeed in 2025, they’re going to need a huge boost from the pitching staff. That goes for starters and the bullpen.

Across the board, the Rockies’ pitching has to be better this season.

Part of the pitching success comes with the catchers though, too.

For a time this spring, it appeared as though the Rockies were considering carrying three catchers, because top prospect Drew Romo was given a chance to go after a roster spot on the big-league club. Romo, at age 23, is the Rockies’ No. 11 overall prospect. He has tremendous upside as a power hitter who can catch, but, and could be worth a roster spot because his bat would allow him to be a DH as well.

Yet, the Rockies sent Romo back to the minors earlier this spring, leaving just two catchers on the opening day roster. That said, here’s a look at where the catchers stand as opening day looms.

Starter: It’s been a good battle in Cactus League play this spring, but, the smart money is still on veteran Jacob Stallings to handle the majority of the catching duties for the Rockies this season. Stallings enters his ninth season in major league baseball, and his second as Colorado’s veteran catcher. He’s just a career .239 hitter, but, his power, and his outstanding chemistry with major league pitchers makes him the type of veteran catcher, and leader that young clubs like the Rockies need in their clubhouse.

Backup: When Romo was reassigned, it became obvious that the Rockies were all in on Hunter Goodman. Drafted only back in 2021, Goodman has breezed through the minor leagues, and has become Colorado’s starting catcher of the future. The way Goodman has played this spring, he was vying for being the Rockies’ main catcher in 2025, and, spring isn’t over yet. He’s hitting .469 with 15 hits and four RBIs in 32 at-bats, while blasting his first home run of the spring on Thursday night. And that follows a productive stint in the major leagues last season. So, while the smart money’s still on Stallings, the Rockies also know they have an excellent option in Goodman, who can also DH, while they also have Romo waiting in the wings.
