Warren Schaeffer is no longer winless as the Colorado Rockies manager. And he got his first win as skipper in a much-needed offensive explosion by the Rockies.
Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Rockies broke out for 19 hits in a 14-12 win against their N.L. West rival. It was Colorado’s best offensive output of the season, and not only did Schaeffer get his first win, but Colorado snapped a five-game losing streak in the process.
It was a huge win, and was fun to watch considering Ezequiel Tovar had a five-hit night in just his second game back from the IL. Then there was Jordan Beck who had two homers and a triple, as he and Hunter Goodman, who had four hits, remained Colorado’s best hitters.
Beck led off the game with a homer, and Goodman hit a bomb as well to give the Rockies the lead. Arizona went in front, but, Tovar and Farmer each homered in the third to give Colorado the lead back, while Beck, Farmer and Michael Toglia drove in runs in the seventh and Tovar drove in Goodman in the ninth to give the Rockies a two-run cushion.
In what was a wild game, the Rockies got a win from Jordan Bird and a save from Seth Halvorsen, while Zach Agnos and Tyler Kinley pitched well in relief of German Marquez as well.
Back on offense, Colorado had three doubles, two triples and five bombs as the Rockies improved to 8-37 ahead of Sunday’s finale with the D-Backs. The game will start at 2:10 p.m. M.D.T. as Chase Dollander seeks his third win of the season.
Here’s three takeaways from the Rockies big win on Saturday night.
- Beck is crushing it
It goes without saying how good Jordan Beck was on Saturday night. But it’s now the new normal. Beck is riding high as he now leads Colorado in homers and RBIs and that’s after being sent down to AAA for two weeks at the beginning of the season.
- Marquez struggled again
Not everything was perfect Saturday night. German Marquez’ start was rocky as he gave up seven runs and seven hits in just three innings. It was disappointing considering he was so good his last outing. But, that’s been the story of Colorado’s starters in 2025, they’re just inconsistent.
- Welcome back Ezequiel Tovar
Tovar made history on Saturday night. After missing an entire month of the season, Saturday night was just his second game back and he went off. Tovar, who had been on the IL for a hip contusion, had his first career five-hit game, with a triple, a homer, a game-clinching hit in the ninth and a pair of RBIs. It had to be so exciting for everyone involved with the Rockies to see their biggest star play like a start for the first time in a month.
