The Colorado Rockies have tried a lot of different things to jumpstart their season. So why not hope that the debut of second basemen Thairo Estrada could be the spark the Rockies need?
Colorado began spring training with high hopes for Estrada, who came over the San Francisco Giants in the offseason. However, those hopes were derailed when Estrada went down the a fractured wrist in the middle of the spring and he’s been on the shelf ever since.
That however, will likely change this weekend or next week. Estrada is completing a rehab assignment at AAA Albuquerque and is expected to join the big-league club either in New York this weekend, or in Miami early next week. Estrada has played both second base and DH for the Isotopes batting 6-for-19 in four games.
Acquiring Estrada was arguably Colorado’s biggest offseason move, and he and good friend Ezequiel Tovar were supposed to anchor what could have been one of the best defensive infields in baseball, with Gold Glove winner Ryan McMahon at third and young star Michael Toglia at first.
That infield has never materialized though. Instead, Estrada’s injury and a later injury to Tovar, sent the Rockies into a tailspin in which they acquired Tyler Freeman from Cleveland only to see him go down, then called up young star Adeal Amador to play second, only to see him struggle mightily at the plate.
The Rockies have gotten a good season out of Kyle Farmer thus far, but, they’ve also tried Adam Schunck and recently acquired Orlando Arcia among others.
In other words, Colorado’s infield has been the opposite of consistent. That however, could change.
If Estrada is healthy and productive, he will man second base almost ever day, and Colorado fans will finally get to see what the plan was as he and Tovar form one of the best up-the-middle tandems in Major League Baseball.
And if all that holds true, maybe, just maybe the Rockies will start to get better.
At least we can hope that’s the case.
