The Colorado Rockies were on the verge of upsetting the Philadelphia Phillies. Then, the Rockies became the Rockies once again.
Colorado led 3-2 in eighth inning and Seth Halvorsen was throwing heat. That’s where things unraveled as Alex Bohm slammed a two-run homer to dead center, which was not only the go-ahead blast, but, part of seven straight runs by the N.L. East star Phillies in a 9-3 win at Cooors Field.
The Rockies had pitched well all night, as Kyle Freeland and Jordan Bird combined to give up just two runs over seven innings. However, Halvorsen gave up the blast to Bohm, and then, Kyle Schwarber hit his 300th career homer in the ninth.
Once again, the Rockies offense also struggled. After being shut out on Sunday, the Rockies managed just six hits to the Philles 17. Ezequiel Tovar did have another multi-hit game and a homer in the first inning, while Brenton Doyle drove in a run. The Rockies struck out nine teams and were just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The loss dropped the Rockies to 8-39 as they prepare to host the Phillies again Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. at Coors Field. Antonio Senzatela will get the ball for the Rockies, who are on a seven-game homestand.
Here’s three takeaways from the Rockies’ loss Monday night
- Freeland showing signs
Even Warren Schaeffer said it after the game, Kyle Freeland has been pitching really well of late. On Monday night, Freeland scattered seven hits and one run. It was his second straight hard-luck start, as the Rockies’ ace has yet to win a game this season. Nevertheless, it was another strong start for the veteran.
- Toglia continues to come around
Michael Toglia ninth double of the season, and he now has 17 extra-base hits. His average isn’t where it needs to be, and he’s striking out a bit too much, but, he’s been so much better in May then he was in April.
- Tovar is back
After a five-hit game last Saturday in Arizona, and an off day on Sunday, Tovar stayed hot, as he had a homer and two hits. He now has two bombs and and seven hits to go with four RBIs since returning from the IL. Once again, Monday night was another example pf how much the Rockies need Tovar in the lineup.
