Chase Dollander was on his way to a no-hitter. It didn’t happen, and instead, the Colorado Rockies lost to the Texas Rangers 2-1 in their first game after manager Bud Black was dismissed.

And so the saga of the Rockies continues.

After walking the first batter of the game, Dollander retired 15 straight Rangers Monday night in Arlington, Texas. But, after Dollander walked the first batter of the sixth inning, and with two hits, the no-hitter, and pretty much the game ended when Wyatt Langford hit a two-run bomb.

In tropical Rockies’ fashion, that was enough as Colorado was held scoreless after Nick Martini drove in Hunter Goodman in the second inning to give Colorado a 2-1 lead.

The Colorado offense managed six hits and saw Jordan Beck’s double-digit hitting streak end. The Rockies also lost the first game of interim manager Warren Schaeffer’s head coaching career.

Colorado is now 7-34 as the Rockies face the Rangers again tonight at 6:05 p.m. Kyle Freeland takes the mound for the Rockies.

Here’s three takeaways from Schaeffer’s debut.

  • Coaching changes

Before Monday night’s game, the Rockies announced new position coaches. With Schaeffer leaving third base, assistant hitting coach Andy Gonzalez was moved to third base coach. AAA Hitting Coach Jordan Pacheco and Minor League Hitting Coordinator Nic Wilson were named as interim hitting coaches on the Major League coaching staff.

Clint Hurdle had returned as hitting coach but is now elevated to Bench Coach for the remainder of the season. None of that made a difference on Monday as the poor hitting remained.

  • Goodman is good

Catcher on Monday, Hunter Goodman stayed hot. He had two hits and a run scored as he continues to be one of the Rockies’ best players and certainly one of their best hitters. Goodman is now hitting .297 with six homers and 24 RBIs and has been one of the very few bright spots in the lineup.

  • Dollander, the good and the bad

Chase Dollander has had a habit of giving up some monster homers in his seven big-league starts. That reared its ugly head Monday in Texas. Pitching a masterpiece that included retiring 15 straight hitters and striking out two, Dollander gave up a shot that ended the deepest no-hit bid a Rockies’ pitcher has had in some time. Yes, it was truly the best, and the worst of Dollander all rolled into six innings of work.
