With the 25-man roster apparently set for Opening Day 2025, the Colorado Rockies aren’t done making personnel moves.
According to Major League Baseball sources, the Rockies are apparently acquiring former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak to add depth and speed to the outfield, per MLB.com.
Moniak, the top pick in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, is expected to sign a one-year, $1.25 million dollar contract while also receiving termination pay after being released by the Angels on Tuesday.
The deal is expected to be announced by the Rockies on Thursday, one day ahead of the season-opener, and Moniak is expected to back up all three outfield positions, and be able to step into a starting role in both left and right field.
The signing comes just days after Zac Veen was reassigned to AAA. Veen was the Rockies’ Spring Training MVP, but was left off the big-league roster, as one of the last Top 30 prospects to be sent down.
In other roster news Wednesday, the Rox lost out on outfielder Greg Jones, after he was claimed off of waivers by the White Sox. The Rockies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
