Amid a brutal start to 2025, the Rockies' roster looks very different then it did on opening day

Colorado has already called up several key prospects in the first month of 2025

Before the regular season got underway, many Colorado Rockies’ fans were wondering if the club had made a mistake by not keeping any of their top prospects on the Opening Day roster.

Well, nearly one month into the season, that decision means very little anymore.

The Rockies are 3-16, have the worst offense in the bigs, and the pitching isn’t much better. To say the Rockies are spiraling would be an understatement. And now add injuries to the equation.

With all that said, the Rockies’ current roster looks very different then it did on March 28.

First, Colorado called Chase Dollander less than two weeks into the season. Then, they sent Jordan Beck down and brought up No. 8 overall Prospect Zac Veen. They also added former Angels No. 1 prospect Mickey Moniak just one day before opening day. Add tot hat rookies like Hunter Goodman getting their chance and Colorado has seen a drastic change in its roster.

Yet, injuries have accelerated even more rookies to Denver.

Last week, the Rockies called up No. 7 overall prospect Adeal Amador, who is just 22 years of age. And when Kris Bryant went down, they added another call-up in Braxton Fullford from AAA. But, they weren’t done yet.

On Saturday, the Rockies announced that they were seeing star shortstop Ezequiel Tovar to the 10-Day IL, and calling up Aaron Schunk for his second stint in the majors. He plays din 39 games with Colorado last season. The Rockies also re-called Beck to Denver for this weekend’s homestead against the Nationals as Brenton Doyle went on the bereavement list.

With all of the roster changes, the Rockies now have six players on the active roster who weren’t on the opening day roster. And normally, that me cause for excitement because young prospects getting their shot to help the big-league club is always exciting. But, right now, that’s just not the case. Colorado has lost seven games in a row, and the call-ups are out of necessity because of injuries, and in particular, the Tovar injury is a huge one.

So, the injection of AAA talent and youth into Colorado’s clubhouse is just another example of what a horrific start the Rockies are off to in 2025. It is true that many of the Rockies’ young players are exciting prospects, but, the circumstances surrounding why they’re playing now are not good.

And while there’s still time to turn things around, the Rockies continue to trend in the wrong direction, and that kind of losing won’t help these young players any.
