The Spring Breakout Series was a hit last year, and something ballclubs and their fanbases wanted Major League Baseball to keep.
And keep it they did. This past weekend, the Spring Breakout was back as the top prospect teams from every Major League club played games, including the Colorado Rockies’ prospects taking on the Chicago White Sox’ best prospects Sunday afternoon in Glendale, Arizona.
Yes, the game itself was exciting as the Rockies bested the White Sox 3-1. But more importantly was the talent on display. And that young talent the Rockies have compiled was shining in the sun on Sunday.
Colorado’s farm system is ranked No. 20 in all of baseball, but, that will likely change after this season, as many of Colorado’s top propsects make their way through the minor leagues this summer and fall. Colorado should also climb in the rankings simply because it has so much young talent, it would be impossible not too.
So now that the Spring Breakout is in the books, here’s five such talents in the Colorado system that should have Rockies’ fans excited after Sunday’s showcase.
5. Jordy Vargas, RHP
Vargas was one of many pitching prospects that got to show his stuff on Sunday. Vargas, unfortunately is also one of many Rockies’ pitchers who had to rebound from Tommy John surgery, and so far this spring, it looks like he has. Against the Chicago prospects, Vargas threw 13 pitches and one fulll inning without giving up a hit, or a walk. And because the Rockies need more pitching in their future, Vargas will be one to watch.
4. Gabriel Hughes, RHP
Hughes has had a strong camp with Colorado this spring, and will soon be in the big leagues. Like Vargas, he too has had injury issues, but, all spring he’s looked sharp, and he did again Sunday. He got the nod for the Colorado prospects as the No. 16 overall propsect in this system, and he threw a pair of scorless innings, showing just how much depth the Rockies have in starting pitching prospects.
3. Sterlin Thompson, OF
There’s plenty of hype around the likes of Charlie Condon, Zac Veen, Yanquiel Fernandez, Benny Montgomery and a host of other outfield propspects in Colorado’s spring camp. Thompson however, has quietly put together a strong spring. As the No. 17 propsect in the organization, Thompson can play multiple positions and his power is an asset that should land him a chance at the big league club in the coming two years. He showed off on Sunday with a pair of hits for the Rockies, and he’s made a case to start the year in AAA.
2. Brody Brecht, RHP
All eyes have been on No. 1 overall propspect Chase Dollander this spring and rightfully so. However, the Rockies have another bonafide star in the future rotation in Brecht. It’s just he hasn’t had the opportunity to show his stuff. He sure did on Sunday, however. A former Iowa football player, Brecht was taken as the No. 38 pick in last summer’ s MLB Draft. But, he wasn’t assigned to the minor leagues in the summer of 2024, and, until this spring, hasn’t really faced much professional hitting. But in Sunday’s showcase, he did, and he pitched a scorelss inning with a pair of strikeouts. Brecht’s stuff, which is considered to be off the charts, impressed Rockies’ prospects manager Bobby Meacham, who is the skipper at AA Hartford.
“I absolutely loved his arm action, snapping that breaking ball really well,” Meacham said per Thomas Hardin of MLB.com “I could tell how happy he was to be out there healthy and pitching in a game like this. It must’ve been a ton of fun.”
1. Adeal Amador, 2B
If there’s one prospect who has consistently shown how professional ready he is this spring, it’s Amador. Of course, his progress to the bigs will be held up by his age, and by who is already on Colorado’s opening day roster. But, even at 21 years old, Amador has shown time and time again why he’s not only the No. 7 propspect, but, why he looks major league ready. In the showcase on Sunday, he blasted a home run, walked and drove in two runs. Sunday of course, wasn’t the first time he’s performed this spring. Before being assigned to AAA last week, Amador was batting .296 with eight RBIs in big-league camp. Yes, it’s true that right now the Rockies have their second basemen in Thairo Estrada and of course, star SS Ezequiel Tovar, but, with how good Amador is, Colorado won’t be able to keep him out of Denver for long.
