If the Colorado Rockies’ opening day rotation isn’t set yet, then they might still want to consider giving young phenom Chase Dollander a shot.
After a rare day off in Cactus League play, the Rockies were back in action Tuesday night at Salt River Fields, and it was Dollander who stole the show in a 3-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Dollander won his second straight start for the Rockies, who obviously have yet to make up their minds about the top prospect in the organization.
And moving forward, it will be a tough decision after Dollander struck out seven Giants on Tuesday, with two walks and no runs. It was his second straight impressive outng after two rough starts earlier in March.
With time winding down on the spring, and Dollander still with the big-league club, the Rockies are likely going to give him one more start, and, they are also waiting on the injury status of Austin Gomber.
Dollander and the Rockies’ pitching staff held the Giants to just six hits on the night, while Colorado’s offense garnered just six hits, two of which came from Hunter Goodman, who is in a battle for a major league catching position.
Two more players in position battles also came through Tuesday night, as Zac Veen picked up yet another hit, while utillity infilder Kyle Farmer had two hits and an RBI. Farmer is fighting for a roster spot, while Veen is the last of the position prospects still with the major league club as spring training starts to wind down.
And as Colorado heads towards opening day, the few position battles left will be interesting to watch, with Dollander’s plight perhaps the most intriguing question to remain in Rockies’ camp.
But on Tuesday night, Dollander looked every bit the part of a pitcher ready for the show, and he gave manager Bud Black plenty to think about.
The Rockies (13-11) are back in action at Salt River Fields when they play the Diamondbacks on Wednesday at 2:10 p.m.
