It’s been a historically bad start to the season for the Colorado Rockies. So, it should have been to no one’s surprise that the Rockies were capable of having a historically bad night once in a while.
And that’s just what happened Saturday night at Coors Field as the San Diego Padres beat the Rockies 21-0. The Padres had 24 hits, five homers and started the game with a five-run first inning, and added an eight-run fourth as well.
The game was especially brutal for rookie Bradley Blalock, who made his second career start and gave up 13 hits in 3.2 innings of work. Blalock was moved into the rotation after Ryan Feltner went on the IL last week. The pitching was bad all night, and it got so bad, Manager Bud Black even turned to catcher Jacob Stallings to get the Rockies through the final two innings.
The Rockies were also bad offensively. They managed just five hits, and left five men on base. Nick Martini led the way with two hits, including a double.
The ugly loss to the Padres dropped Colorado to 6-33 ahead of Sunday’s series finale at 1:10 p.m. M.D.T. Winless German Marquez will start for the Rockies, who will then leave for a six-game road trip with the first three games at Texas.
Here’s three takeaways from the Rockies ugly loss Saturday night.
- The division is out of reach
Colorado’s loss Saturday night shows just how far the Rockies are from not only the Padres, but also the rest of the N.L. West. It’s easy to say they’re 19.5 games back and that’s true, but, it’s also easy to see just how far the Rockies are from having the talent, the roster or the resources that the Dodgers, Padres and even the Diamondbacks have.
- Jordan Beck keeps hitting
Colorado seemed to give up on Beck early in the season. Beck however, sure hasn’t given up on himself. He had another hit Saturday night, and remains one of the hottest Rockies in the clubhouse with a nine-game hitting streak.
- Ugly pitching
It seems no matter who gets the start, they can’t perform. That was the case for Bradley Blalock on Saturday. He surrendered 12 runs, all earned, and have up three bombs. It was yet another start where the Rockies seemed to have no chance from the mound.
