Colorado Rockies rumors: The latest on Trevor Story
The MLB lockout has ended and free agency could start as soon as Thursday night. As a result, Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story will look to either re-sign with the team or look to find a new home in the coming days.
So what is the latest news on the Trevor Story free agent sweepstakes?
Where will Colorado Rockies free agent Trevor Story sign?
First of all, it should be noted that regardless of whether or not Trevor Story re-signs with the Colorado Rockies, he has expressed that he does not want to change positions. That was reported last month so unless things have changed since then, that will rule out some of the possible suitors for Story.
The Houston Astros are the team that seems to be the best fit for Story. They will likely lose one of their best players, Carlos Correa, to free agency and Story could replace him.
Story is from Irving, Texas, a suburb of Dallas and he told Rox Pile back in October that geography to his home is one of the five things that he is looking at for a team in free agency. Of the teams that are his suitors, Houston is the closest to his home.
Other teams that have also expressed interest or could have an interest in Trevor Story are the Seattle Mariners, the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Los Angeles Angels, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Minnesota Twins, the Chicago White Sox, the San Francisco Giants, and the Rockies.
For a contract, Story was projected to get a six-year deal for $126 million by MLB Trade Rumors back in November but many of the players that signed before the lockout received more than those predictions.
Considering the frenzy that will be coming in the next week or so, MLB teams could create a bidding war for Trevor Story and other free agents as they will try to get find the pieces to make their teams a championship contender in 2022 and beyond.
UPDATE (7:20 PM M.T.) Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports on Twitter that Story “will not re-sign with the Rockies.”
