Seven former Colorado Rockies that you should be rooting for in the 2021 MLB Playoffs
Not surprisingly, the Colorado Rockies will not be taking part in the postseason for the third year in a row after they finished with a record of 74-87, which was 15.5 games back of the second National League Wild Card Spot.
However, there are seven former Colorado Rockies players that could be participating in the 2021 MLB Playoffs in some fashion.
Former Colorado Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino will be playing for the Boston Red Sox.
Former Colorado Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino will be playing for the Boston Red Sox in the 2021 American League Wild Card Game on Tuesday against another one of his former teams, the New York Yankees.
While he has not been as dominant as he was in his final season in a Rockies uniform or his first season as a member of the New York Yankees, Ottavino pitched better this season than he did last.
He went 7-3 with a 4.21 ERA in 69 appearances with a FIP of 3.96. Those numbers are fairly elevated as in his last 11 appearances in September and October, he had an ERA of 9.72 (10.85 FIP). From the beginning of the season through September 3, he had an ERA of 3.35 (2.89 FIP).
Former Colorado Rockies infielder DJ LeMahieu may be playing for the New York Yankees.
Former Colorado Rockies infielder DJ LeMahieu may be playing for the New York Yankees but he will not be facing his former teammate, Adam Ottavino, and the Boston Red Sox.
Currently, LeMahieu is on the 10-day injured list with a sports hernia. He was just placed on the IL before the final day of the season so he will also be out for the ALDS, if the Yankees make it that far. If the Yankees make it to the ALCS, LeMahieu may be able to rejoin the team then but it will depend on his health.
LeMahieu has had a down year after winning the AL batting title (with a .364 average) and coming third in AL MVP voting in 2020. In 2021, LeMahieu hit .268/.349/.362 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI in 150 games. He has a 1.5 rWAR on the season when he had a 3.1 rWAR in exactly one-third of the games that he played in 2021.
Former Colorado Rockies reliever Tyler Matzek will be pitching for the Atlanta Braves.
Former Colorado Rockies reliever Tyler Matzek will be pitching for the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers.
After having a great season for the Atlanta Braves in the truncated 2020 season, he continued that success in 2021. Matzek appeared in 69 games for the Braves and had an ERA of 2.57. He also had a FIP of 3.20, a WHIP of 1.222, and he struck out 11 batters per nine innings.
Former Colorado Rockies infielders Eric Young and Walt Weiss are on the coaching staff for the Atlanta Braves
Former Colorado Rockies Eric Young, Sr. and Walt Weiss are on the coaching staff for the Atlanta Braves. Both of them played on the Rockies in the 1990s and later, served as Rockies coaches.
Young played second base and the outfield for the Rockies from 1993 through 1997 and was the Rockies first base coach from 2014 through 2016. Weiss played on the Rockies from 1994 through 1997. He was in the Rockies front office as a special instructor and adviser in the Rockies front office from 2002 through 2008 and managed the team from 2013 through 2016.
When the Rockies faced the Braves in Colorado last month, we caught up with both of them and they both told us about their experiences in playing with the Colorado Rockies first Hall of Famer, Larry Walker.
Former Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado will play third base for the St. Louis Cardinals
The wounds are still fresh for Colorado Rockies fans as Nolan Arenado will be in the playoffs with the St. Louis Cardinals when they face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2021 National League Wild Card Game.
He had a familiar Nolan Arenado-like season in the power department in 2021 as he hit 34 home runs and had 105 RBI but his batting average (.255) and on-base percentage (.312) are lower than his usual season.
Former Colorado Rockies reliever Jake McGee will be in the San Francisco Giants bullpen
After ending his career with the Colorado Rockies on a sour note, Jake McGee has been great for the San Francisco Giants (and great for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020).
For the Giants in 2021, McGee has been their primary closer. He has an ERA of 2.72 in 62 games with 31 saves. He has an ERA+ of 151, a FIP of 3.35, and a WHIP of 0.905 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 6:1.
Bonus: Not a former Colorado Rockies player but Colorado native Kevin Gausman
In addition to his teammate Jake McGee, Colorado native Kevin Gausman will be a big key to the San Francisco Giants. He is one of the leading candidates for the NL Cy Young Award. In an NL-leading 33 starts, Gausman went 14-6 with an ERA of 2.81 in 192 innings. He has averaged nearly 11 strikeouts and just above two walks per nine innings with a WHIP of 1.042.
