Colorado Rockies-San Diego Padres: Weather updates from Coors Field

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres have had the second game of their three-game series at Coors Field delayed by rain.

A rain-snow mix has been falling all day in Denver and the surrounding area. It’s the second day that weather has impacted the meeting between the two National League West rivals.

Rain started falling on Monday night just before first pitch with a quick downpour that lasted no more than a minute. However, the rain returned with a vengenance in the bottom of the second and really began falling hard in the top of the third.

Fans in the Rockpile and upper decks of Coors Field were evacuated because of lightning in the area shortly after the game began. Rumbles of thunder could be heard in the distance throughout the game’s early stages.

Chad Bettis began the night on the mound for the Rockies. Touting a 3-0 mark and 1.44 ERA, San Diego strung together four straight hits with one out, highlighted by a three-run homer by Carlos Asuaje. The Padres put together four runs and four hits in the top of the first to seemingly take early command of the contest.

However, Colorado quickly responded in the bottom of the first, with two-run home runs from Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story to tie the game at 4-4. Story’s home run was estimated at 464 feet, the longest of his career.

That was the highlight of the night for the Rockies as San Diego used a nine-run seventh inning to grab a 13-5 victory.

On Tuesday night, Kyle Freeland (0-3, 5.85 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound against San Diego’s Eric Lauer, who will be making his Major League debut.

Another pitcher who could make his MLB debut on Tuesday night is Brooks Pounders, who was called up by the Rockies earlier in the day.

5:45 p.m. — The tarp is on the field and the game is officially in a delay.

5:53 p.m. — Our friends at @RockiesWX say the precipitation should be ending soon … but it’s been a very damp afternoon and some time will be needed to get the field ready to play when this current batch of precipitation ends.

6:01 p.m. — Current conditions are 37 degrees with light rain/snow mix falling. No movement on the tarp and news on a new starting time.

6:12 p.m. — Tarp still on field with plenty of water on it. Fans milling about concourse but few if any in the seats.

6:23 p.m. — Estimated first pitch is now 7:25 p.m. The tarp is being removed.

6:55 p.m. — Grounds crew continues to work on the field but it will be playable for first pitch at 7:25 p.m. Some fans have started to take their seats for what will be a very chilly night ahead.

7:26 p.m. — The game began after a 46-minute delay. Game time temperature at 37 degrees.
