Final Thoughts and Stats
As you can see by the stats, Gray has done well against the D’Backs and Greinke has done well against the Rockies this year. However, by delving further into the stats, both of them have trouble further into the game.
Greinke’s opponents have an offensive slash line of .201/.246/.306. The second time around, it is better as his opponent’s have a slash line of .236/.279/.413. Third time around, it is .244/.287/.438. So, if the Rockies can get to Greinke early, the stats show that he will progressively get worse as the game goes on.
Inning by inning through the first seven innings, innings three and four are his worst as opponents have a .250/.291/.408 slash line in the third inning and a .264/.310/.405 in the fourth inning.
For Gray, opponents hit .174 and .181 in the first and second innings. It rises drastically to .264 in the third inning. In innings four, five, six, though, opponent’s have hit .324, .356, and .327.
In regards to plate appearances, the first time around batters only hit .185 the first time around but they hit an alarmingly high .344 the second time around.
In other words, don’t be surprised if Bud Black delivers the hook if Gray gets in the slightest bit of trouble in the middle of the game to go to a fresh arm. However, I think that this could be a pitcher’s duel but, as you already know, only time will tell.
