After dropping game one on Tuesday night, the Lancaster JetHawks, Class A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, came back on Wednesday night, looking to tie the series up before it shifts to Modesto. The JetHawks fought back in the bottom of the ninth for the second night in a row, but dropped the game in 11 innings.
Garrett Hampson got the JetHawks rolling on Wednesday night with a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning to give them a 1-0 lead over the Nuts. However, the slugfest continued in the third as Eric Filia hit a two-run homer for Modesto and Hamlet Marte hit another solo shot for Lancaster. After three, the game was tied, 2-2.
Both starting pitchers had solid outings, but the home run derby continued in the sixth inning as Filia hit his second home run of the game. The Nuts continued to hit around to score two more and take a 5-2 lead.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when a series of four hits in a row retied the game at five all. In the bottom of the 10th, Sam Hilliard was thrown out at home trying to score the winning run with two outs.
In the top of the 11th, the Nuts finally broke through the JetHawks pitching for a three-run home run off the bat of Jordan Cowan to take an 8-5 lead.
The JetHawks couldn’t rally in the bottom of the 11th and will head to Modesto down 2-0 in the best-of-five series. Marc Magliaro picked up the loss for the JetHawks.
