The Asheville Tourists have a whole new roster compared to 2014, and yet they still have some of the same attributes as the ’14 crew: this club wins.
They’re thick in the middle of a playoff race right now — and a tight one at that — and playing meaningful August and September games in the minor leagues is a great way to develop young players, even if winning doesn’t really matter in the minor leagues.
The last week (5-2): The Tourists have gotten fairly hot again, winning five of their last seven (including Thursday night’s win over Greenville), and seven of their last 10 (including the 23 runs they put up on Kannapolis that we discussed in their team update last week).
All told, the club is now 28-17 in the second half, which is good enough for first place in the South Atlantic League’s Southern Division, though the Tourists would need to win the second half to make the playoffs, having not won the first half.
Overall, Asheville is having a more than respectable year at 60-55, which would be good enough for second place in their division, and if it holds up and they don’t win the second half, they’d still make the playoffs if (a) the Savannah Sand Gnats, the first half winner, wins the second half again, and (b) the Tourists keep the second best overall record in the division behind Savannah.
Basically, as long as the Tourists more or less keep doing what they are doing for another couple weeks, they’ll make the playoffs, because if the season ended today, they’d be in the postseason in the South Atlantic League.
