Kevin Gregg has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds; as we’ve hypothesized earlier this month, should the Colorado Rockies inquire?

More from Colorado Rockies Rumors

Relief pitcher Kevin Gregg has just been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds. It’s no secret the Colorado Rockies need some help on the mound, and it’s no secret that between Denver and AAA Albuquerque, there’s not a lot of attractive depth in the organization right now (besides Yohan Flande).

Enter: Kevin Gregg? Gregg is 36 years old and far removed from his prime, though he did have a nice year in 2013 with the Chicago Cubs.

I’ve hypothesized before about Wandy Rodriguez (who was picked up by the Rangers and is now throwing very well in Texas), Grant Balfour, and Mike Pelfrey, and now Kevin Gregg, which should come full circle for you on pitching help for the Rockies: there’s just not a lot out there.

Save a trade, the midseason replacement options aren’t very attractive. And it’s doubly unfortunate considering how Rockies starters have failed to go deep into games all year thus far, putting more and more pressure on a bullpen that will very, very soon need replacements.

And while I still think Balfour is a better option than Gregg (and Rodriguez would’ve been the best option), none are better than what the Rox have now.

If you’re new(ish) to the team, welcome to being a Colorado Rockies fan. There’s no James Shields on the horizon!
