We cover the Rockies, of course, but sometimes off days happen and we get bored. So today, let’s go around the Majors to catch up on some of the other 29 teams.
The Rockies have the day off, and Spring Training is winding down. It’s about time.
Let’s get you caught up on what’s happening around the Major Leagues today:
More from Colorado Rockies Prospects
- Colorado Rockies: Has Sean Bouchard earned a second look in 2023?
- Colorado Rockies: Ezequiel Tovar to make his debut today
- Colorado Rockies: Potential players for September call-ups
- Colorado Rockies call up no. 14 prospect Michael Toglia
- MLB Pipeline: The Colorado Rockies’ farm system has strengthened … a lot
The New York Mets sign outfielder Juan Lagares to a contract extension.
The deal is reportedly worth $23 million over four seasons (after this year), and there’s a fifth year option which could lock Lagares to the Mets through 2020.
Lagares played only 116 games last year and hit .281 with four home runs, but his defense earned him a Gold Glove.
He was second among outfielders in defensive runs saved (behind Jason Heyward), and two years ago, Lagares set a Mets rookie record with 15 outfield assists.
Clearly, the Mets obviously thought enough of him to lock him up. Now they just need to get Tulo, right?
Justin Verlander will head to the disabled list for Opening Day.
For the first time in his career, Justin Verlander will be placed on the 15-day DL with a triceps strain. He’ll miss Opening Day, and it’s not yet clear when he can return for the Tigers.
With the AL Central race shaping up to be incredibly close, it’s important for the Tigers to have him back as soon as possible, obviously.
Call to the Pen
A decision on Josh Hamilton’s suspension will likely come after Opening Day.
Commissioner Rob Manfred has weighed in and wants to exercise caution and leave no stone unturned, I guess.
Hamilton is recovering from shoulder surgery, anyways, so it’s not like he was going to be playing. We’ll just have to wait and see how long he’ll be suspended by MLB for drug violations.
Jose Valverde opts out and has been released by the Padres.
Oh, Jose. We know him so well from his time with the Diamondbacks, and he’s been trying to hang on to a career with the Padres.
Papa Grande had actually thrown pretty well this spring, but when he realized he wasn’t going to make the Major League club, opted to test the open market.
According to Padres manager Bud Black, if Valverde can’t find a willing buyer, he has an open invitation to return to AAA with the Padres and see what happens.
Now’s your chance, Bridich. Papa Grande will push the Rockies over the top!
